Tariff Uncertainty: Navigating the Chaos and Communicating Your Company's Position (Yes, There Will Be Winners and Losers)

Let's talk about the elephant in the room – or maybe it's more like a confused squirrel in the supply chain – the looming threat of tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico.

Those of you who know me know that I hate politics, so this is not political in nature. Let’s stick to the facts and how it is affecting the business environment people on both sides of the aisle find themselves in.

Even if these tariffs never materialize, the uncertainty itself is causing a real headache for businesses. We're in a period of economic limbo, and let's face it, no one likes limbo.

We're all watching and waiting, wondering what's going to happen. And while we wait, the business world is experiencing some turbulence.

The Ripple Effects of Uncertainty: More Than Just a Headache

Even without official tariffs, the mere possibility is causing some serious disruptions:

  • Supply Chain Scrambles: Companies are frantically reevaluating their sourcing, leading to delays and potential shortages. It's like trying to reorganize your kitchen during an earthquake.
  • Price Volatility: Prices are jumping around like a caffeinated kangaroo, making it impossible to predict costs.
  • Investment Hesitation: Businesses are holding back on big investments, because who wants to gamble when the rules might change tomorrow?
  • Logistical Pileups: Anticipating disruptions, some companies are stockpiling, resulting in crowded warehouses and logistical nightmares.

And here's the kicker: this uncertainty is creating a clear divide. There will be winners and losers. Strategy before tactics isn’t just a mantra—it’s a necessity.

The Potential Landscape: Who Benefits, Who Doesn't?

  • Domestic Producers - Potential Advantage: If tariffs go through, domestic producers could see a significant boost. "Made locally" becomes a major selling point.
  • Cross-Border Manufacturers - Significant Challenges: Companies relying on Canadian and Mexican manufacturing or raw materials sourcing face increased costs and supply chain disruptions.
  • Everyone Else - Navigating the Unknown: The rest of us are trying to figure out how to adapt and minimize the impact.

Why Staying Quiet Is a Bad Move (Especially Now)

When uncertainty is the rule of the day, silence is not a strategy. Businesses that succeed in turbulence do so by taking control of their narrative. By communicating the right story, you can retain customer trust and even expand your market share.

In this chaotic environment, your company's communication is crucial:

  • Addressing Customer Concerns: Customers are worried about price increases and product availability. Transparency builds trust.
  • Showcasing Preparedness: Even if tariffs don't happen, demonstrating that you have contingency plans builds confidence.
  • Controlling the Narrative: If you don't speak up, others will, and they might not tell your story the way you want it told.
  • Highlighting your adaptability: Show that your company can handle change.

The Best Defense is a Good Offense

If you are a domestic producer, and the tariffs actually do what they are designed to do, tell prospects that the playing field has been leveled and that you can provide quality American-made products at a cost advantage. Emphasize that you will not disrupt their supply chain.

Similarly, if your pricing is going to have to increase due to the tariffs, you better get your story ready and prepare to justify the higher pricing because your competitors are going to come knocking on your customers' doors.

The Final Chirp

Preparation and clear communication are key in a climate of uncertainty. Don't wait for the dust to settle. Take action now to protect your business and reassure your customers. And don't shy away from going after new customers if the tariffs are an advantage for you.
